IT HAS BEEN QUITE A JOURNEY

Our history

in the vibrant city of Ibadan, Nigeria

1989-1999

In August 1986, a transformative encounter with God in the vibrant city of Ibadan, Nigeria, changed the life of a young teenager, Tokunbo Odulaja (now Tokunbo Emmanuel), forever. Fuelled by divine inspiration, he began writing the very next day—an awe-inspiring 19-hour marathon of prophetic expression that marked the start of a lifelong calling as a prophetic scribe. This unstoppable passion led him to self-publish his first book, Sharing the Word of God, in November 1989, laying the foundation for a remarkable journey of faith, creativity, and publishing explorations.

Before he relocated to London, United Kingdom, in 1993, Tokunbo published two more books, Rediscovering God and Revival in the Desert.

In 1995, determined to share his message widely and despite challenges with traditional publishers, Tokunbo republished Sharing the Word of God using the emerging power of desktop publishing technology. This bold step ignited his entrepreneurial spirit, and by 1999, he launched his first publishing venture, Emmanuel House Ltd, turning his vision into a thriving reality.

THE START OF A NEW CHAPTER

1999-2009

Tokunbo’s decade of experience publishing his own books laid the groundwork for a new era of excellence, and Emmanuel House quickly grew into a renowned publishing imprint, becoming a trusted name for ministers and emerging authors across the UK. In 2003, Emmanuel House expanded its vision by launching Baruch Press, an imprint dedicated to serving ministers of the gospel.

Emmanuel House quickly gained momentum, producing standout projects such as the 400-page novel The Promise by Rogba Bewaji, a 15,000-copy print run of Designed for Success by Dr. Ebenezer Ajitena, and the impactful Prayer is Not the Answer by Dele Olawanle, among many others. By 2005, Emmanuel House and Baruch Press had achieved an extraordinary milestone, releasing a combined total of 100 titles while also partnering with other publishers to bring dozens more works to life.

Despite financial and operational challenges that led to the closure of Emmanuel House Ltd., Tokunbo’s unwavering dedication to publishing remained steadfast. He transitioned to independent publishing, launching a new imprint, Sophos Books. This fresh start eventually evolved into the company now known as Sophos Books Ltd. In 2006, the imprint debuted its flagship title, The Secret of Abraham, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Tokunbo’s publishing journey.

Impacting Africa and Beyond

2009-2019

In 2009, Tokunbo experienced a profound divine encounter that redirected his publishing mission toward impacting the African continent. This life-changing moment inspired the publication of the widely celebrated book, The Shift of a Lifetime. Fuelled by this vision, Tokunbo returned to his home country, Nigeria, where he spent two transformative years expanding his publishing capacity and laying the groundwork for a deeper, continent-wide influence.

Under Tokunbo Emmanuel's visionary leadership, Sophos Books had already earned a reputation for its exceptional editing services, delivering manuscripts that met international standards. However, the years spent in Nigeria (2011–2013) witnessed the introduction of the company’s prowess in ghostwriting and storytelling. During this period, Sophos Books brought to life impactful projects such as The Faith Clinic Revival, chronicling the legacy of the late Dr. I.K.U. Ibeneme; The King & I, the remarkable story of Stella King; and Through the Ages, a collaborative work celebrating the 50-year journey of the Evangelical Christian Union, Ile-Ife. These projects showcased the company’s dedication to preserving history and amplifying powerful narratives.

Upon his return to the United Kingdom, Tokunbo continued his publishing mission with renewed vigour, serving an ever-growing community of authors through Sophos Books’ exceptional publishing services. The company experienced exponential growth, delivering a remarkable number of published works and solidifying its reputation as a trusted partner for writers worldwide.

Global Reach and Innovation

2019-2024

The global pandemic of 2020 did not hinder the momentum of Sophos Books—instead, it became a period of remarkable growth. The company has since expanded its publishing operations, with a particular focus on theatrical plays, including the acclaimed Ghost Twerkers by Akinola Christopher, which garnered powerful endorsements from the South African government.

Sophos Books also extended its reach internationally, delivering books to Liberia, West Africa, and undertaking projects in multiple European languages, such as Être un Prêcheur pour lui and Soutenu Dans La Famine (French) and Il Gigante In Me (Italian). These achievements underscored the company’s resilience and commitment to serving diverse audiences worldwide.
